What is a Self Assessment?

A self assessment is the process HMRC uses to collect income tax from individuals and businesses that don’t have tax automatically deducted.

As part of this process, you are required to submit a self assessment tax return each year, which includes earnings, income sources, capital gains and other relevant financial information.

The self assessment tax return enables HMRC to calculate how much tax you owe, or whether you’re due a refund. Filing accurately and on time is essential to stay compliant and avoid any fines or penalties.

Who Needs to Submit a Self Assessment Tax Return?

HMRC has specific requirements for individuals submitting a self assessment tax return, as detailed below:

  • You are self-employed and have a gross income of over £1,000
  • You are a partner in a business partnership
  • You earn over £150,000 a year in taxable income
  • You were required to pay the High Income Benefit Charge
  • You have rental income of more than £1,000

Online Self Assessment Services: FAQs

What documents do you need to submit my self assessment tax return?

The documents you’ll need to provide depend on the reason you’re submitting your Self Assessment Tax Return.

If you’re filing because your income exceeds £150,000, and your only source of income is employment (PAYE), we typically just need your P60 and P11D forms issued by your employer. We might need your P40, but this is on a case-by-case basis.

When you choose SwiftBooks to help with your self assessment tax return, your dedicated accountant will advise which specific documents they need from you to file your tax return.

Can I speak to my tax accountant directly?

Yes, you will be able to speak directly to your assigned accountant. They will keep you updated throughout the entire process, and you can communicate with them via email or schedule meetings at times that work for you.

What's the difference between a self assessment tax return and a VAT tax return?

A self assessment tax return is submitted to HMRC once a year and it reports your business’s total income, allowable expenses, and profit over the financial year. This determines how much income tax and national insurance tax you owe.

In contrast, a VAT tax return can be submitted monthly, quarterly or annually. It reports the VAT you’ve charged on sales and the VAT you’ve paid on business expenses. This report determines whether you owe HMRC or are due a refund.

If you’re VAT registered when completing your annual self assessment tax return, it’s important to report your net income, excluding VAT. This ensures your tax calculations are submitted correctly.

Can SwiftBooks help me with my company registration?

Yes, we include company registration, PAYE registration and VAT registration in all of our accounting packages.

Will I be entered into a contract?

No, all our packages are rolling agreements and can be cancelled at any time, unless stated otherwise prior.

How long does it take to get setup?

Once your business is up and running we can get you setup on our system within a few working days.

How easy is it for us to switch accountants?

Very easy, all you need to do is forward your previous accountants details and we will request the handover details directly.

What kind of support do SwiftBooks offer?

Our packages contain unlimited email support from your dedicated accountant.

You will be kept in the loop with upcoming deadline dates, outstanding items and regular suggestions to operate more efficiently.

Do SwiftBooks offer services other than their monthly packages?
